Beetroot Halwa - Without a crystal of sugar in it.

Beets are the richest source of Vitamin B9 which helps cells grow and function very well. They play a key role in controlling the damage in blood vessels and reducing the risk of heart diseases. Beets being the versatile and vibrant type of vegetable is known for its earthy flavor just like potatoes and sweet potatoes, but have more richness than them. They are the complete package of essential vitamins, minerals, plant compounds.

They don’t only give your plate a vibrant and pop out color but they give you the pop out benefits too. Whether you are using them as salad or as vegetables to consume in your daily routine or even as a medicine in case you are feeling anemic. Eating beetroots maintains healthy potassium levels.

Now either you are using them for your kids to make their cheeks glow like roses or you are giving it to your parents in their old age to help them with anemic conditions or to help them fight with heart diseases. Beets are perfect at every age.  A half of beetroot daily can help maintain blood cells to grow in good amounts.

So, if by consuming a little of this magical red vegetable you are having so many benefits, why are we not adding them in our meals?

My twin boy is crazy for his sweet tooth cravings. I sometimes feel really worried that he consumes so much of sweets and meetha, that is why it took me a step ahead of searching for a recipe without a crystal of sugar still yummy in taste. When I tried this the first time I was wondering that he might not like it because of no sugar in it, but this recipe creates magic when I served this to my twins. Even my twin daughter doesn’t like sweets so much but she also enjoyed this because of its pop out color and nuts in it.

So how do I make this halwa

For this you only need 4 ingredients and half an hour of yours in the kitchen and you are done.

  1. 1 and half Beetroots (For serving of 2 i take one and half beets)

  2. Milk 300ml (I don’t prefer mawa or khoya but if you are fond of you can take that and makes milk quantity half)

  3. Munakka 10-15 pcs only (soak them a night before)

  4. Your choice of nuts

One night before preparations

  • Take 10-15 pcs of munakka and wash them gently then soak them overnight with half a cup of water.

  • I prefer using nuts overnight soaked so my kids can easily chew them. In case your kids eat nuts as is you can put them in halwa as is after chopping.

Recipe -

Take a pan and pour 5-6 big tablespoons of ghee, because I am making this halwa for my kids. I prefer using home made ghee and in little extra quantity, You can use ghee as per your choice. Add grated beetroot in a pan and allow it to cook for 5 to 10 mins. It will drain some water when it starts cooking so let the water evaporate in medium to low flame gas. Once your beetroot starts getting dry add 300ml of milk and stir properly. Again let it cook on medium to low flame gas and keep stirring occasionally. I take boiled toned milk without straining its cream/malai, but in case you want to use khoya or mawa you can cut the quantity of milk in half and take khoya or mawa as well.

By the time your beets are getting cooked, take the soaked munakka and keep the seed aside from all the pcs, now add these pcs into a mixer jar and grind them finely. You can use its water too to make it little extra (I offer its water to my kids and they love drinking it, as it has too many benefits) Now once it's all grinded add this paste into halwa and keep stirring. Add your favorite nuts too at this time so they also cook properly.

Once your beetroot is cooked and the milk has evaporated completely. You are ready to serve it to your loved ones. You can give this once in a week as a dessert.

Note - I serve dry fruits to my kids in small chopped portions, but you can chop them or grind them in fine powder as per your child enjoys the nuts and dry fruits.
